Drivers tested to kick-off festive season

In a 24-hour blitz, police caught 35 drivers under the influence of either drugs or alcohol on our roads.

Police conducted a state-wide operation (Operation Stop Drink Drug Drive) targeting drink and drug drivers, using both static and mobile testing, from 7am on Friday 16 December until 7am on Saturday 17 December.

This is a disappointing increase on a recent similar operation between 1-2 November, which netted 24 drink or drug drivers.

Officers tested 5602 drivers for alcohol, with 28 drink driving offences detected. Two drivers failed to comply with testing and were immediately disqualified from driving for 12 months.

The highest alcohol reading was a 43-year-old Mount Gambier man who recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.194 – nearly four times the legal limit.

Police also conducted 157 drug tests, with five drivers testing positive to drugs.

Fifteen vehicles were impounded and 16 immediate loss of licence notices were issued.

Police warn motorists that they can expect to be tested for alcohol or drugs at any time, but especially during the festive season.

Superintendent Bob Gray, Officer in Charge, Traffic Services Branch said, "While other people are enjoying a catch-up with their work colleagues, friends and family over the festive season, police will be hard at work trying to keep the roads safe for everyone."

"If you are going to have a drink over Christmas, then just don't drive. Take a taxi or designate a driver who will remain alcohol and drug free."
