Drivers urged to travel safe in lead up to Bathurst 1000

In the lead up to this year's Supercars Australia event, NSW Police are urging motorists to travel safely as they make their way to Mount Panorama this weekend.

A large crowd is expected this year at Bathurst 1000, general duties and specialist police will be out in force targeting speeding, drink and drug driving, mobile phone use and seat-belt offences.

Western Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Brett Greentree, said there will be a significant police presence on all roads leading to Bathurst and motorists must obey traffic legislation, particularly speed limits.

"Dangerous or reckless behavior will not be tolerated, and road users should do everything they can to ensure the safety of themselves and those around them," Assistant Commissioner Greentree said.

"Road safety is everyone's responsibility and motorists should avoid putting themselves, their passengers, and other road users at risk.

"Poor driver behavior contributes to the vast majority of fatal and injury crashes at present, so people need to drive to the conditions that are prevailing at the time and show patience and courtesy to other road users.

Random drug and alcohol testing will be in place in and around Bathurst, and people are urged to take precautions to make sure they arrive safely and get home from the event in one piece.

"If you are going to have a drink, the best option is to not drive and have a Plan B," Assistant Commissioner Greentree said.

Operation Bathurst, a high-visibility police operation – which will also target anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related violence – will run from Tuesday 30 November until Sunday 5 December 2021.
