Driving offences - Arnhem Highway

A 24-year-old man was apprehended for speeding on the Arnhem Highway near Jabiru yesterday.

Officers from Darwin Traffic Operations were conducting a highway patrol and detected the man driving at 100km/h in an 80km zone.

On speaking to the driver, police determined he was driving on an expired licence, in an unregistered, uninsured and defective vehicle and towing an unregistered trailer. The driver also tested positive to a roadside drug test, and secondary testing returned positive results for amphetamine and methamphetamine.

He was issued a Notice to Appear in court at a later date.

Officer In Charge of Darwin Traffic Operations, Senior Sergeant John Ginnane said his officers were conducting long-range regional patrols when the driver's excessive speed drew their attention.

"Speeding, with no licence, driving a motor vehicle which was uninsured, unregistered and unsafe for public roads, with an unregistered trailer in tow and methamphetamine in his system. Any one of these factors would have been dangerous enough to other road users, but when you combine all seven it is very clear that the police conducting extended operations on regional highways have removed a rolling time bomb from our roads.

"This conscious decision by a motorist to deliberately put everyone around him at risk of death or disfigurement is astounding. If drivers outside major urban areas in the Northern Territory believe themselves immune to laws designed to protect the safety of others, they can think again.

"Expect to see us when you're driving long distances. Expect to have your speed and your licence checked, and expect to be tested for the presence of drugs as well as alcohol in your body."
