Drop off your old flares

This summer, Transport Safety Victoria and WorkSafe Victoria will be running a new pilot program – FlareSafe, to improve boater safety and compliance with equipment requirements.

Throughout January there will be three collection points at popular waterways for boaters and paddlers to safely dispose of their expired flares.

Shaun Rodenburg, Director Maritime Safety, said that it's crucial to check the expiry date on flares.

"Flares typically have a lifespan of three years from date of manufacture, but it can be hard to find a location to get rid of them," Mr Rodenburg said.

"The FlareSafe collection points will allow people to dispose of their old flares safely and conveniently."

You don't need to register to attend these events, just pop by to drop off your old flares and pick up some boating safety tips. Two of the three events (details below) will be held alongside FloatSafe clinics – so bring your inflatable lifejacket with you too, and learn how to self inspect it.

If you can't make one of these pilot events, contact your local police station to see if they will accept your expired flares.
