We are playing a key role in a new £1.6 million initiative to strengthen the UK's digital research infrastructure.

The Computational Abilities Knowledge Exchange (CAKE) NetworkPlus has been launched to connect experts, share skills, and encourage collaboration across the country.

The project, funded by the UK's Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) programme, is led by EPCC at the University of Edinburgh, with us and the University of Cambridge as major partners.

Professor Tobias Weinzierl from our Computer Science Department is co-leading the network's knowledge exchange hub.

Building stronger connections

The UK is home to world-leading digital research facilities and projects, but these efforts can sometimes be fragmented.

CAKE aims to bridge gaps between different communities, helping to share best practice, reduce duplication, and achieve greater impact.

By linking researchers, technical experts, and policy leaders, the network will ensure that advances made in the UK are recognised internationally.

It will also help bring global innovations to the UK, driving collaboration with partners around the world.

Over the next three years, CAKE plans to unite diverse communities involved in digital research, showcase UK successes at major events, and create opportunities for knowledge exchange.

Opportunities for collaboration

This autumn, the network will launch its first call for DRI Knowledge Exchange Fellows.

These fellows will receive funding to promote collaboration in their specialist areas, with more calls to follow.

The programme will also support global placements and exchange visits, enabling UK experts to work alongside international teams on shared challenges.

In addition, a series of retreats will bring together specialists to address major technical issues, combining complementary skills to find innovative solutions.

The Knowledge Exchange and Communications NetworkPlus was launched as part of the UK's new compute roadmap.
