Behind-the-scenes wildlife experiences, hidden animal cameras and a habitat box to take home are all part of The Briars Wildlife Eco Explorers school holiday program, returning this September to inspire curious kids through hands-on adventure, creativity and discovery.
Designed for children aged 7 to 13, Eco Explorers can be experienced as a single day of adventure or a full three-day program. The school holiday experience immerses young explorers in the unique environment of The Briars, where they'll connect with nature through hands-on activities and behind-the-scenes experiences.
Running on Tuesday 29 September, Wednesday 30 September and Thursday 1 October, Eco Explorers invites children to step into the role of eco explorers. They'll help rangers set up hidden cameras to track sanctuary wildlife, head out on a guided bush walk on Country, try their hand at ochre crushing, and go dip netting to discover fascinating creatures living beneath the water's surface.
There's also plenty of opportunities for creativity, with nature clay creations, nature mobiles and the chance to build a bat box to take home. Through exploration, art and discovery, children can develop a meaningful connection to the environment that continues long after the program ends.
New this school holidays, families can choose a single day or the full three-day program, following feedback from parents. The flexible format provides an engaging holiday activity for children while supporting families balancing work commitments during the school break.
Mayor Stephen Batty said the program was a wonderful way for families to make the most of the school holidays.
"The Briars is such a special part of our Peninsula, and this program gives kids a real hands-on connection to nature, wildlife and Country. We've listened to families and added a single-day option, so it's easier than ever to get involved," Cr Batty said.
The full three-day program costs $415, or $145 per day. Places are limited to ensure small group sizes and quality behind-the-scenes experiences.
Kids will also have even more sanctuary to explore, with The Briars Wildlife Sanctuary recently expanded from 90 to 130 hectares. The expansion creates vital habitat for threatened species on Bunurong Country and includes new walking tracks with interpretive signage.
More than just a school holiday activity, Eco Explorers helps children build a lasting connection with nature, discover the wildlife on their doorstep and create a connection with The Briars that can continue to grow for years to come.
