Elecare, Similac and Alimentum Infant Formulas

TGA

Consumers and health professionals are advised that Abbott Australasia Pty Ltd and Abbott US have initiated recalls of some batches of the following infant formula products due to potential microbial contamination.

  • EleCare
  • Similac
  • Alimentum.

These products are regulated as 'foods for special medical purpose'. EleCare can be supplied under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and is available nationally, via a doctor's prescription, from pharmacies and hospitals. Some people may have purchased any of these products using direct mail order.

These products are not therapeutic goods and are not included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. However, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has asked the TGA to assist with raising awareness about this recall because these foods are usually supplied under a prescription.

What should I do?

Parents and carers should change to a suitable alternative product as soon as possible and stop using the affected product once the alternative has been obtained. You should seek advice on the use of alternative products from your doctor.
