Election Commitment Delivered - Northern Territory Coastal and Marine Management Strategy 2019-2029 Launched

The TerritoryLabor Government has launched the Northern Territory Coastal and MarineManagement Strategy 2019-2029 to ensure the long-term health andviability of the Territorys coast and seas.

Delivering onan election commitment, the Strategy sets a 10-year direction for themanagement and protection of the coastal and marine environments of theNorthern Territory.

The Territoryscoast and seas are unique, with a coastline extending 10,953 kilometres,including 887 islands, and coastal waters covering more than 72,000 squarekilometres.

A partnershipgroup was formed involving key landowners, community and industry partners tohelp develop the strategy for the long-term benefit of the environment and theeconomy.

It focuses onworking together, fostering sustainable industries and supporting theTerritorys unique outdoor lifestyle.

As stated bythe Minister for Environment and Natural Resources, Eva Lawler:

Our coastaland marine environments play a key role in the cultural, economic andrecreational life of the Territory, and are home to important ecosystems andabundant sea life.

We promised tobase our decisions on science and the views of the community, and we have doneso, ensuring our marine environments are managed in the best way possible.

Thisstrategys purpose is to safeguard our coasts; foster sustainable industriesand maintain the Territorys unique lifestyle.

As stated by the Chief Executive Officer, Territory Natural Resource Management, Karen May:

"I would like to congratulatethe NT Government on developing the Territorys first long term plan tosafeguard and manage Territory coasts and seas.

"The development ofNorthern Territory Coastal and Marine Management Strategy is a first step, itis now important for government, key landowners, community and industry to worktogether to begin the real work of implementing the strategy."

As stated by the Chairman, Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation, Richard Fejo:

"The Larrakia people are pleasedto see the launch of the Coastal and marine Management Strategy.
