EU Unveils New Clean Energy Projects in Africa

European Commission

Today's announcement includes the following set of projects to add to the list of previous announcements:

1) Madagascar:

  • Construction of the Volobe Hydropower Plant, increasing Madagascar's generation capacity significantly and supplying clean, reliable electricity to large numbers of people.
  • Financing of mini-grid electricity for lighting up rural areas without access to reliable electricity supply.

2) Malawi: Construction of the Mpatamanga Hydropower Plant, a major new renewable energy investment designed to strengthen Malawi's electricity generation capacity and support sustainable economic development.

3) Benin: Extension and rehabilitation of the low- and medium-voltage electricity network in the three departments of Mono, Cuffo, and Bourgou, expanding energy access in underserved rural and semi-urban areas of Benin, and supporting inclusive growth, local job creation, and social services.

4) Zambia: The Nexus Energy-Water (Newza) 2.0 programme will support the use of renewable energy from solar panel and digital technologies to upgrade water supply systems of main cities and rural communities along the Lobito Corridor.

5) Cote d'Ivoire: The project Energie pour le développement durable de l'Est de la Côte d'Ivoire aims at increasing the share of renewable energies in the energy mix of Côte d'Ivoire with the construction of a photovoltaic solar power plant in Sérébou.

6) Democratic Republic of Congo: the ElectriFi project aims at increasing renewable energy generation production and energy efficiency by supporting early-stage companies and projects in the access to the clean energy sector.

7) Uganda:

  • Construction of a transmission line that will interconnect Uganda and Tanzania power grids to enable the interchange of power between the two countries as well as with the other Eastern Africa Power Pool countries and the Southern Africa Power Pool region.
  • Rehabilitation project aims to extend the Nalubaale–Kira HydroPower plant's lifespan by 30 years.

8) Burundi: rehabilitation, modernisation and densification of the electricity distribution network in Bujumbura.

9) Morocco: Credit line to support Morocco meeting its renewable energy and energy efficiency targets while also considering water use and resource efficiency.

10) Tunisia:

  • Support to renewable energy integration through support to three ELMED projects including interconnection cable and creation of a new national dispatch center in Tunisia and technical assistance to Société tunisienne de l'électricité et du gaz (STEG) to oversee and manage the ELMED project.
  • Support to the national plan of developing 1.7 GW of renewable energy, including 100 km of transmission line.
  • Support to the Sidi Bouzid solar plant.

11) Egypt:

  • Bilateral loan to a cement company, financing a thermal optimisation investment, leading to the first use of low-carbon hydrogen in cement production in the country.
  • To support a bus company to expand and renew its bus fleet, including electric vehicles.

12) At regional level:

  • Two projects focusing on accelerating the access to affordable, clean and sustainable cooking solutions in the Central and East Africa, and Southern Africa and Indian Ocean regions by strengthening the regulatory framework and business opportunities.
  • Regional North of Africa: Capacity building of Mediterranean transmission system operators and regulators for regional integration of electricity systems.
  • Support to the ACP Infrastructure Climate Resilient Fund targeting investments primarily in climate resilient infrastructure in Africa, in transportation, digitalisation, economic zones and industrial parks and clean energy sectors.
  • Support to the Leapfrog Asia and Africa Climate transition fund investing in companies whose business models support the low-carbon transition and climate-resilient pathway in emerging markets.

13) EFSD+ financed projects:

  • Projects on renewables: AccelerET; SOL Programme; IFDK-AfricaGreenCo; HI-BAR; Renewable Energy Transition; Nasira+; Green Energy for Africa & Asia.
