The CCTV network which covers Glenelg - from the Esplanade and Foreshore to the retail precinct of Jetty Road - is being upgraded and expanded.
Almost half the existing cameras are being replaced with new hardware and another 38 cameras are being added to the network, taking the number to almost 80 cameras in total.
New cameras will be added to five locations along Jetty Road, as well as in Bouchee Walk and Chapel Plaza.
The remaining cameras will be installed along the Glenelg Foreshore from the Broadway Kiosk and including Brian Nadilo Reserve, Chapel Drive and to the Glenelg breakwater.
Holdfast Bay Mayor Amanda Wilson says the timing of the CCTV camera network expansion could not be better before the busy summer events season kicks into gear.
"We have many great events coming up which will attract tens of thousands of people to the Bay, so having an improved and expanded CCTV network is essential to help increase safety and reduce crime," Mayor Wilson said.
The new locations were chosen by Council, in consultation with SA Police and Surf Life Saving representatives, after identifying gaps in the current CCTV network.
Just last week, a camera was added to the Glenelg Town Hall providing coverage over the Glenelg Foreshore Playground and across Moseley Square towards the jetty.
Funding was received by the Federal Government from the Safer Cities program to upgrade the CCTV network.
Glenelg has had a CCTV camera network since 2006. A review of the existing CCTV network and coverage provided led to the development of a masterplan to expand CCTV coverage across the Glenelg precinct.
Council received Federal Government funding from the Safer Cities program to upgrade the CCTV network to ensure improved safety and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).
As the installation of new cameras is rolled out down Jetty Road, there will be some minor impact on parking however it will be temporary.
