Expanded Container Deposit Scheme Launches Tomorrow

NT Government

The Northern Territory's expanded Container Deposit Scheme begins tomorrow.

More beverage containers will be eligible for a 10-cent refund, putting more money back into Territorians' pockets.

The expansion will reduce litter, support local jobs, and strengthen the recycling industry across the Territory.

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is delivering stronger environmental outcomes and greater economic benefits for Territorians, with the expanded Container Deposit Scheme commencing tomorrow.

From Wednesday, 1 July, all beverage containers up to 3 litres, including empty wine and spirit bottles, larger juice and flavoured milk containers, and plain milk containers will be eligible for a 10-cent refund.

The expansion follows recycling reforms passed by Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment Joshua Burgoyne in October 2025.

"During our year of growth, certainty and security, we are delivering more ways for Territorians to recycle while putting more money back in their pockets," he said.

"Since the scheme began in 2012, more than one billion beverage containers have been returned through Territory depots, with more than $120 million paid back to Territorians.

"With fewer containers ending up in landfill and less litter in our public places, our government is delivering practical outcomes that make a real difference for everyday Territorians."

More than 30 commercial collection depots across the Territory service communities from Darwin to Alice Springs and into remote regions, along with fundraising donation points operated by charities, community groups, schools and sporting organisations.

"We are making it easier for Territorians to take part in the scheme to help keep the Territory cleaner, support industry, and create local jobs - including in our remote communities," Minister Burgoyne said.

The expansion has been backed by industry across the NT, and Envirobank Managing Director Narelle Anderson said the expansion would build on the scheme's strong success.

"The expansion of the Container Deposit Scheme is a positive outcome for Territorians, the environment and the recycling industry," Ms Anderson said.

"It will increase the recovery of valuable recyclable materials, create additional economic opportunities and help keep communities cleaner by reducing litter and landfill."
