Works to revitalise the existing floodway at Liberty Avenue Reserve in Rowville are complete and it is now ready for the community to explore and enjoy.
The construction of a dry creek bed in the floor of the floodway will enhance stormwater management and act as a natural filter to improve water quality. It will also provide valuable habitat for fauna and flora.
Works also include raised shared path crossings over the floodway and the reconstruction of sections of footpath to reduce frequent flooding. The shared path upgrades will improve access and safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
The dry creek bed will adapt to varying rainfall conditions, flowing as a stream during heavy rain, acting as a billabong in the days following rain, and drying up for the time in between.
Revegetation has been undertaken using local indigenous plant species that are adapted to these conditions, ensuring the new environment is resilient.
The new habitat will attract native insects, animals and birds such as Latham's Snipe and Buff-banded Rails. As the creek bed changes form with the seasons, many other species may find their home here or stop by for a visit.
