More Territorians will own a newly built home in 2026 thanks to the Finocchiaro CLP Government's passing of the First Home Owner Grant Amendment (Extension of Scheme) Bill 2025 today.
The bill extends the time frame first home buyers can access the $50,000 HomeGrown Territory Grant scheme for building or buying their new home to 30 September 2026.
Treasurer and Minister for Housing Construction Bill Yan said the bill gives certainty to Territorians buying their first home.
"It gives breathing space for first home buyers to save their deposit, shop around and build or buy their new dream home," he said.
"That's because the CLP is the party of home ownership, making sure more first home buyers can experience the excitement of walking into a place they can call their own."
Minister Yan said the benefits of new housing goes far beyond the front door.
"The nearly 300 new home builds in the pipeline supported by our range of grants will lead to more than $130 million in direct economic activity for Territory businesses," he said.
"This means busy tradies, suppliers with a steady stream of orders and retailers having plenty of homes to fit out."
"And every new home built and lived-in will free up more properties for renters."
He again called on the Federal Government to increase the NT cap for their low-deposit home guarantee scheme from $600,000 to $850,000 in line with the median increase of other capital cities and responding to Darwin's house price growth.
"Do the right thing and unlock home ownership for more Territorians, especially those wanting to start families, so they can buy new houses appropriate for their needs," he said.
