First time ever: Renewables overtake gas in WA

Climate Council

FOR THE FIRST time ever, renewables have overtaken gas to become the largest source of power in Western Australia's biggest energy grid, according to new data from the Climate Council.

In 2021, renewables provided 32 percent of the South West Interconnected System's power, jumping 26 percent, while gas provided 30 percent, its lowest level in more than a decade.

Former West Australian, Climate Councillor and former BP Australasia President, Greg Bourne said this is a huge milestone for Western Australia, especially when you consider that renewable energy generation has more than doubled in just three years.

"Wind and solar are now supplying more of the south-west's power than gas, despite an increase in electricity demand. Gas simply cannot compete with renewable energy, which is bringing down power prices for consumers and creating a cleaner, healthier energy system."

"WA needs to continue to cash in on its incredible renewable advantage and supply of critical minerals to create new clean jobs, lower electricity bills and strengthen its economy."
