Just over a year after overhauling its flight training enterprise, the Air Force is on track to graduate 1,500 new pilots this fiscal year - validating a modernized model built with the speed and agility needed to meet rising global operational demands.
According to Air Education and Training Command officials, crossing this threshold confirms the Future of Undergraduate Pilot Training (FUPT) initiative as a viable, sustainable framework to help close the service's nearly 2,407-pilot shortfall.
"Reaching 1,500 pilots is a milestone, but it is not the finish line," said Lt. Gen. Clark J. Quinn, AETC commander. "FUPT was built to overcome long-standing constraints including instructor shortages and aircraft availability to deliver the aviators our combatant commanders require."
Initial Pilot Training (IPT)
Under the FUPT framework, AETC partnered with civilian aviation programs across Texas, Arizona, Florida, and Georgia. Student pilots complete foundational flight training at Federal Aviation Administration Part 141-certified civilian flight schools before entering military aircraft.
Students earn their private pilot license, instrument rating, and multi-engine rating during this civilian phase, entering the military pipeline with approximately 120 flight hours compared to roughly 30 under the legacy Initial Flight Training (IFT) model.
"Moving foundational flight training to civilian partners allows us to reserve military aircraft, instructor capacity, and flying hours for the advanced, military-specific training only the Air Force can provide," Quinn said.
Military Phase: Advanced T-6 Instruction
Following the civilian phase, students transition to a military syllabus centered on the T-6A Texan II and advanced simulation to earn their wings.
By arriving with a baseline, students allow military instructor pilots to focus immediately on tactical fundamentals rather than basic stick-and-rudder skills.
To support this integration, 19th Air Force redesigned the T-6 curriculum into a competency-based syllabus tied directly to operational requirements. The updated syllabus reduced T-6 training days by 31%, accelerated training flow, and enabled the throughput AETC needed to meet enterprise requirements.
The goal is not speed for its own sake," said Maj. Gen. Travolis Simmons, 19th Air Force commander. "The goal is to produce elite aviators through a training system that is more deliberate, data-driven, and aligned with the demands of operational units.
Expanding Capacity & Long-Term Readiness
By leveraging civilian partners, the Air Force effectively added the training capacity of an entire flying training wing without standing up a new military installation. The milestone also supports standardizing annual production across the traditional undergraduate pilot training enterprise.
"Achieving 1,500 validates that we can scale future undergraduate pilot training and we now continue the focus on refining the training to ensure the quality of our graduates matches the scale," Quinn said. "Our instructor pilots, maintainers, and support teams adapted this enterprise to meet the need ensuring a steady flow of skilled aviators for our combatant commands."
