Free CPR sessions to save lives

Free CPR awareness sessions to increase confidence of Gold Coasters when faced with a life-threatening situation will be held across the city next week.

In partnership with Queensland Ambulance Service, the City is hosting the drop-in sessions designed to be casual and interactive for interested residents.

Mayor Tom Tate said the sessions built on work the City had already done to improve outcomes from cardiac arrests by placing life-saving defibrillators in City libraries, major sporting venues and some community centres.

"The statistics are there. 9 out of 10 people won't survive a cardiac arrest without CPR or access to a defibrillator," Mayor Tate said.

"I know first-hand that it can happen to anyone, anywhere, so by increasing the number of people who feel confident commencing CPR on a heart attack victim, we will be increasing the number of lives saved.

"We know that even a basic understanding of CPR increases the chance of survival.

Mayor Tate said these are drop-in style sessions so you can stay for as long as you like with no registration or previous training required.

Assistant Commissioner Drew Hebbron said, "Early, effective bystander CPR and defibrillation is instrumental in the chain of survival.

"We're pleased to work in with the community and the City of Gold Coast to educate as many people as possible in the life-saving skill of CPR."

The three sessions are being held at:

  • Coolangatta Senior Citizens Centre, Wednesday 22 February, 10am-12pm
  • Robina Community Centre, Thursday 23 February, 10am-12pm
  • Helensvale Library & Cultural Centre (Piazza), Thursday 23 February 3:30pm – 5:30pm
