Future Guaranteed for Wynnum's neighbourhood and community centre

Minister for Communities and Housing, Minister for Digital Economy and Minister for the Arts The Honourable Leeanne Enoch

The future of Wynnum's Neighbourhood and Community Centre has been guaranteed, following a successful two-year pilot program.

Member for Lytton Joan Pease said there had been strong community support for a Wynnum centre, reinforcing the need for an ongoing presence of a Neighbourhood and Community Centre.

"Neighbourhood and Community Centres provide vital supports in the communities they serve, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly that Wynnum residents would like to continue having a centre in their local neighbourhood," Ms Pease said.

"I'm pleased to say that the Palaszczuk Government will continue to fund the delivery of a neighbourhood centre for the Wynnum community.

"The centre will operate from St Peter's Anglican Church on Charlotte Street in Wynnum starting in early April and will play an important role in supporting a connected and cohesive community for Wynnum residents."

Minister for Communities and Housing Leeanne Enoch said following a thorough procurement process, the centre will be delivered by Y-Care (South-East Queensland), an experienced and trusted provider of Neighbourhood and Community Centre services.

"The Palaszczuk Government is funding Y-Care (South-East Queensland) over the next 18 months, and we have every confidence that they will deliver a world class service to the people of Wynnum," Minister Enoch said.

"I'd like to commend Joan Pease for her strong advocacy as the Member for Lytton, in ensuring that the Wynnum community will continue to have its own community centre.

"The Palaszczuk Government is proudly investing around $19.5 million in 2021-22 to support 127 neighbourhood and community centre services across Queensland.

YMCA Community Services Manager, Bec Andlemac said, "We are excited to work with the Wynnum community and local service providers to meet existing and emerging community needs."

"The centre will form a hub to connect and empower the people of Wynnum and neighbouring suburbs. From community programs and events, emergency relief, to services delivered by the Y or in collaboration with local partners"

"The Y has a rich history in creating healthy, connected thriving communities. We can't wait to get started and thank Minister Enoch and the Department for this great opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives." Ms Andlemac said.

Ms Enoch said centres like this are the cornerstones of their communities.

"The Queensland Government is a strong supporter of the 127 government-funded centres in Queensland, including here in Wynnum," she said.

"These facilities respond to the needs and priorities of their local communities and are safe places for people to seek support, be referred to services and connect with other people and their community."
