Future STEM Leaders Takeover Melbourne's West

Victoria University

Victoria University joined 1000 girls from across Melbourne's west for this year's Amazon Tech day in Melton.

Following the success of last year's event, 1000 girls from local primary and secondary schools attended the day to hear from current and emerging leaders across a large variety of industries.

As the event's university partner, VU had a key role in the day. This included the 'Women in STEM' panel featuring VU researcher and lecturer - Dr Hannah Thomas.

As a health researcher - science and technology have been central to her studies and career. Her current work is looking at how the brain reacts to high intensity exercise to see how this may support early detection of brain deterioration including dementia.

Hannah's key message for budding tech leaders was simple - stay curious.

"Don't get too hung up on the final destination or the perfect job title, as long as you're chasing opportunities that excite you, you're on the right path," Dr Thomas said.

Our VU booth, featuring an immersive VR tour of our health and trades facilities, along with a hands-on health activity - was very popular among the students keen to discover an employment opportunity of the future.
