The new Emergency Department at Geraldton Health Campus has opened its doors to patients, a significant milestone in the transition to the newly completed redevelopment of the hospital.
Following the recent announcement that the $192 million redevelopment had reached practical completion, commissioning leads from WA Country Health Service have been working to ensure the new treatment spaces are ready to receive patients.
Community Mental Health will be transitioned into the new part of the hospital in the coming week, with services including the new Intensive Care Unit, High Dependency Unit, Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit and Adult Mental Health Inpatient Unit set to move across to their new clinical spaces from mid-September.
The hospital commissioning team has also been busy welcoming more than 120 new staff with appointments to an additional 50 positions being finalised in the coming weeks.
Works are continuing the new radiation oncology unit and upgrades to renal dialysis treatment spaces, providing Mid West patients with greater access to lifesaving care closer to home.
Geraldton Health Campus' redevelopment forms part of the Cook Labor Government's record $5.5 billion investment in health infrastructure, the largest hospital building program in Western Australia's history.
Delivery of the radiation oncology unit includes a $12.6 million contribution from the Commonwealth Government, with completion expected next year.
As stated by Health Minister Meredith Hammat:
"The opening of the Geraldton Health Campus Emergency Department to patients is an important first step in the transition of services into the new redevelopment.
"Clinical leads from across disciplines are working hard to prepare the new services for opening, including recruitment and onboarding, developing care pathways, and testing new equipment.
"Improving local access to specialist mental health, renal and oncology services for people in the Mid West is a key priority for The Cook Labor Government.
"On a recent visit to Geraldton, we were able to see first-hand how this bright, world-class facility will support staff to deliver exceptional care to their community now, and for decades to come."
As stated by Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey:
"We're delivering health infrastructure on a scale never seen before in WA, and the Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment is a great example of that work in action.
"Just weeks after construction reached practical completion, patients are already receiving care in the new Emergency Department, delivering a real benefit for the Geraldton community and the Mid West.
"This redevelopment has increased capacity, enhanced clinical services and technology, and improved patient care to meet the Mid West's future healthcare needs."
