Geraldton Health Campus Redevelopment Hits Milestones

  • Major works progress on Geraldton Health Campus Redevelopment Project
  • Site works for Mid West's first Radiation Oncology Unit commenced
  • Major construction on Adult Psychiatric Unit complete and ready for fit-out
  • Part of Cook Government commitment to ensuring all Western Australians can access the healthcare they need, when they need it

Work is progressing on the Geraldton Health Campus Redevelopment Project as it moves towards practical completion later this year.

The hospital's exterior is complete and the building is watertight, allowing the internal fit-out and system commissioning such as information and communications technology systems, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing, to proceed.

Finishing touches are being made to the ambulance canopy and emergency department (ED) entry canopy, which will lead patients to the new and reconfigured ED with increased services and capacity.

Additionally, the design has been finalised for the new Radiation Oncology Unit - the first of its kind in the Mid West.

The purpose-built facility will enable patients across the region to access care closer to home.

Concept images of it have been released as site preparatory works such as earthworks and demolition begin.

Major construction of the Adult Psychiatric Unit is also complete, marking the first major component of the redevelopment to be finished and ready for furniture and equipment to be fitted in the area. Building commissioning of the facility is now taking place ahead of the broader redevelopment opening.

Once complete, the upgraded Geraldton Health Campus will feature an expanded emergency department, a new intensive care unit and high dependency unit, as well as an integrated mental health service comprising an adult mental health inpatient unit and a mental health observation area.

The redevelopment continues to create jobs for locals, with more than $10 million in contracts awarded to Mid West businesses.

The Geraldton Health Campus Redevelopment Project is funded through the Cook Government's $4.9 billion health infrastructure commitment.

Funding for the Radiation Oncology Unit includes $25.8 million from the State Government and $12.6 million from the Federal Government.

As stated by Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey:

"Our government is making substantial investments to improve access to care for patients in the Mid West, and it's great to see progress on the Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment continue ahead of practical completion later this year.

"Despite the empty rhetoric from the Liberals and Nationals, the last redevelopment of this hospital was undertaken by the Gallop Labor Government and it is the Cook Labor Government that is again making a transformational investment in the Geraldton Health Campus.

"We are also delivering an Adult Psychiatric Unit and the Radiation Oncology Unit, that will mean people in the Mid West region can access the care they need when they need it without lengthy trips to Perth to access critical services.

"With the main hospital building now watertight, we can focus on installing furniture and critical infrastructure inside the building, such as ICT and engineering systems that enable testing and commissioning."

As stated by Health Minister Meredith Hammat:

"We are getting closer to the finish line of this significant hospital redevelopment, set to enhance access to healthcare for Mid West residents.

"Providing radiation oncology services at Geraldton Health Campus will be so important to local patients and their support networks who, once this facility is finished, will no longer need to travel to the city for treatment.

"I am also proud to see major milestones delivered on other parts of this important project as our government's record investments in healthcare make real, meaningful differences to the lives of Western Australians."

As stated by Mid West Minister Jackie Jarvis:

"The Cook Government has committed to providing billions of dollars to regional areas to ensure there are local job opportunities and access to major services and infrastructure.

"It's fantastic to see this redevelopment progress, enhancing care and creating local jobs in the Mid West."
