Government Secures Winter Gas Supply

Dept of Industry, Science and Resources

The Albanese Labor Government is taking every practical action to ensure Australians have secure, affordable gas.

Following confirmation from industry and experts that Australia's east coast market has sufficient gas supplies, Minister for Resources and Northern Australia Madeleine King will not implement gas market export controls.

Minister King said it would not be necessary to take further action under the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism for Q3 2026, after exporters assured the Government they would supply sufficient gas to meet demand throughout the third quarter of this year.

In April, Minister King gave notice of her intent to consider using powers under the ADGSM because the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission forecast a potential shortfall.

Minister King said she had now received assurances from exporters that there will be more than enough gas to meet the demand of Australians.

The decision is based on advice from the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, the ACCC, the Australian Energy Market Operator, and information from LNG exporters.

If Australia's outlook changes, the Government will not hesitate to take further action.

Minister King said all east coast storage facilities are at or near 100 per cent full.

The Albanese Government is delivering more gas to Australian homes and businesses through the introduction of a domestic gas reservation scheme.

The gas reservation scheme will require gas exporters to supply a proportion of their total production to the Australian market - equivalent to 20 per cent of exports - from 1 July 2027 ensuring Australians have the affordable gas they need.

The 20 per cent domestic reservation will put strong downward pressure on domestic gas prices, shield our industry and households from global price volatility, and ensure Australia's energy security by avoiding potential gas supply shortfalls.

"The reservation will build Australia's energy sovereignty, grow gas reserves and ensure more Australian gas stays in Australia," Minister King said.

"Until the domestic gas reservation scheme is in place, and if shortfalls are forecast, I will not hesitate to use existing measures, such as the Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism, to ensure Australia's domestic energy security."
