Vienna hosted the 2025 ESA Living Planet Symposium, which brought together 6,900 participants from 125 countries from 23 to 27 June 2025.
During the event, the European Space Agency (ESA) convened a panel titled "Towards Operational Greenhouse Gas for Policy", where WMO's Global Greenhouse Gas Watch (G3W) Director, Gianpaolo Balsamo, joined a lively discussion alongside Antony Delavois, Yasjka Meijer, Itziar Irakulis Loitxate, Mark Dowell and Tomohiro Oda.
Recent progress on G3W was presented, reflecting the work of its Advisory Group - chaired by Dr Vincent-Henri Peuch and Professor Greg Carmichael - and three Task Teams led by Dr Prabir K. Patra, Dr Laurence Rouil and Dr Lesley Ott. Together, they include over 60 experts.
Integrating satellite data with in situ measurements is essential to meet the precision requirements of G3W. This work is carried out in collaboration with the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS), the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS), and with support from the Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) and World Weather Watch (WWW) programmes.
Results from the first G3W Global Data Provider workshop , held in March 2025, were presented during the event. Work will continue after the summer break, with a G3W Network workshop planned for November 2025.
