In response to the overwhelming community feedback to proposed drug law reform, ACT Greens spokesperson for drug harm minimisation Johnathan Davis MLA is proposing a Legislative Assembly committee inquiry into alcohol, tobacco and other drug harm minimisation.
"We know that the community expects more than just decriminalising the possession of drugs," Mr Davis said. "We also know that decriminalisation without a comprehensive suite of policies that support those who struggle with drug dependency will fail to address the underlying social, economic and health impacts of drug dependency in our community."
Mr Davis, who chairs the Standing Committee on Health and Community Wellbeing, will call on the Committee to launch an inquiry into Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drug Harm Minimisation Policy at their next meeting.
"The ACT Greens were the only political party to take a comprehensive suite of policies to support those who struggle with drug dependency to the election," Mr Davis said. "We committed to double the funding for drug and alcohol treatment services, to support people who suffer from drug dependency.
"The substantially increased support for the ACT Greens at the election proves the community is ready to have a serious conversation about how we can best minimise the social, economic and health impacts of drug dependency in our community.
"That is why I will propose to the Standing Committee on Health and Community Wellbeing that now is the right time to facilitate such a conversation."
