More than 30 Ballajura locals got their hands dirty this autumn as part of the City of Swan's 2025 Branching Out sustainability workshop series, which explored the vital role of trees in urban environments.
Throughout April and May, the free workshops shared ways residents could make their property more wildlife-friendly, aesthetically pleasing, cooler in the hotter months, and resilient to Perth's climate.
Attendees also learned how they could make a positive difference to the urban forest by taking advantage of the City's free street tree program.
Expert presenters included Yann Toussaint, a UWA lecturer, author, and sustainability educator, as well as Fiona Blackham, a sustainability educator and owner of Gaia Permaculture.
Together, they highlighted how urban forests mitigate climate change, boost air quality, reduce heat island effects, and enhance biodiversity.
Passionate horticulturist and WA gardening identity Neville Passmore launched the series, offering one lucky participant a bespoke garden consultation as the grand prize.
Others who attended four or more sessions were entered into a prize draw, with 'Gardening Goodies' hampers awarded to enthusiastic runners-up.
The series attracted 35 individual participants and 69 workshop attendees.
Attendees praised the opportunity to hear from industry professionals, taking away practical insights into soil health, tree selection and sustainable garden design.
The City's ongoing sustainability program, Thinking Green, shares ways you can make a difference to your property and in your neighbourhood.
