Hazardous weather conditions this weekend

MidCoast Council

MidCoast Council will be monitoring the weekend's weather closely with strong winds predicted and hazardous coastal conditions according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

"Weekend High tides will peak after 9pm tonight, and Saturday and Sunday nights at around 1.8m," explained Council's Director of Engineering and Infrastructure, Robert Scott.

"These tides, together with the predicted wind wave conditions are concerning for us, particularly in regard to our coastal erosion hotspots at Manning Point, Old Bar and Jimmys Beach.

"Over the weekend we will be frequently monitoring these areas to assess any impacts and what, if any, action needs to take place."

Winds up to 40 knots are expected as a result of a low pressure system near New Zealand. As the low deepens, powerful southerly seas and swell are expected to generate hazardous and damaging surf conditions across the weekend, with coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing, to be avoided.

Council will monitor conditions closely as the situation unfolds and assess whether there is a need for the closing of specific beach access points, both vehicle and pedestrian.

"While the beaches remain open, we urge everyone to practice caution around our coastal areas this weekend," added Rob.

South facing beaches will be particularly exposed to the forecast weather conditions.

Community members are advised to keep an eye on conditions, monitor warnings and advice from the Bureau of Meteorology.
