The Hervey Bay Hospital Expansion has today been officially opened, after the Hospital Rescue Plan project was completed.
The Hervey Bay Hospital Expansion includes a new 10-bed Intensive Care Unit, a new 25-bed medical ward, an additional lift and a rooftop helipad to provide critical access for patients.
The new rooftop helipad is just 35 metres away from the hospital's Emergency Department, providing direct and enclosed access and marking a significant improvement on the previous 120-metre transfer space required at ground level.
The expansion was delivered by transforming vacant space on Level 2 of the hospital's Emergency Department building.
The Crisafulli Government's Hospital Rescue Plan for Hervey Bay has already increased the number of parking spaces on site to almost 1,000 alongside the completed hospital expansion.
The expansion was delivered on time and under budget, in contrast, an independent review found Labor left the project with a $54 million budget blowout and a two-year delay.
The Crisafulli Government's Hospital Rescue Plan is delivering three new and 10 expanded hospitals.
Premier David Crisafulli said the expanded hospital would deliver health services when Hervey Bay needed them most.
"The Hervey Bay Hospital Expansion is delivering health services when you need them, with more hospital beds and a new Intensive Care Unit," Premier Crisafulli said.
"This expansion is part of our Hospital Rescue Plan, and is building the hospitals needed now and for the future.
"We promised to reduce ambulance ramping and stabilise the elective surgery waitlist, with the Hervey Bay Hospital expansion, we're delivering exactly that for this region."
Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Tim Nicholls said after a decade of decline under Labor, Hervey Bay finally had the hospital expansion it deserved.
"The former Labor Government was incapable of delivering the health infrastructure desperately needed in Hervey Bay," Minister Nicholls said.
"We promised to deliver the hospital infrastructure Queenslanders need, and this upgrade at Hervey Bay Hospital is the prime example of fulfilling that commitment.
"This is a major expansion delivered as part of the Hospital Rescue Plan, and delivers better health infrastructure for the Wide Bay."
Member for Hervey Bay David Lee said the completion of the hospital expansion was a win for the growing Fraser Coast community.
"I've spent years fighting for Hervey Bay's fair share with this hospital expansion, first as a Councillor and now as the local MP, and I'm so proud to see our community come together to celebrate its opening," Mr Lee said.
"This is an important milestone for our community, knowing families, retirees, and all those who live in our beautiful region have access to world-class healthcare when they need it."
