Professor Richard Wong, Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), shared his insights on artificial intelligence (AI) as a panellist at the Global Prosperity Summit (GPS) 2025 today (20 May). The summit, held in Hong Kong from 19 to 21 May, brought together renowned scholars and international experts to discuss pressing challenges impacting global development.
During the panel discussion on AI and the Future of Work, experts explored how AI is redefining the nature of work and the opportunities and risks this transformation presents. Professor Wong, alongside representatives from industry leaders such as OpenAI, highlighted the profound socio-economic impact of AI. He emphasised the potential of engaging AI to address global challenges and build consensus, the need to move beyond understanding AI to mastering its application, and called for multidimensional, multi-layered approaches to AI governance. Professor Wong advocated for proactive engagement with AI while underscoring the enduring value of human creativity and authenticity in a world increasingly shaped by technology.
Professor Wong remarked that people should not fear AI but rather embrace it as a tool to adapt and thrive in the evolving landscape. He stated, "We should harness it, probe it, push it and use it to get answers."
