Honouring Service This Anzac Day

SA Gov

On Anzac Day, South Australians will gather at dawn to honour the service, courage and sacrifice of all Australians who have served in Australia's Defence Force.

At services across the state, communities will come together to recognise all those who have and continue to wear our nation's uniforms during times of conflict, as well as in humanitarian and peacekeeping operations.

Anzac Day also serves as a solemn occasion to honour the memory of the more than 103,000 Australians who have given their life in our country's name.

Every day, thousands of South Australians live the Anzac legacy, not only through military service, but also through the broader impact of service across individuals, communities and our state. Anzac Day provides an opportunity to reflect on this shared legacy and on the values of courage, resilience and mateship that continue to shape our national identity.

It is also reflected in the contribution of families who support their loved one's service, often adapting to the demands of military life with resilience and quiet strength, forming an enduring part of our nation's service history.

For many, the day can bring moments of solemn reflection and South Australians are encouraged to look out for one another and seek support if needed.

In Adelaide, the 2026 Anzac Day commemorations will begin with the Dawn Service at the South Australian National War Memorial at 6.00 am, followed by the Adelaide Anzac March at 9.30 am and the traditional Service of Remembrance at the Cross of Sacrifice in Pennington Gardens at 11.15 am.

On Anzac Day, current and former military personnel can travel free all day on Adelaide Metro buses, trains and trams by wearing their uniform or service medals or by showing a Veteran Card.

Additional services will operate to help people travel to Dawn Services, the Adelaide Anzac March and other commemorative events, including extra buses from selected RSL clubs and a free, accessible Digger Shuttle operating after the march.

Some temporary service disruptions will apply due to event activities. Passengers are encouraged to check details at adelaidemetro.com.au or by calling 1300 311 108.

As put by Chris Picton

This Anzac Day, we honour service in all its forms – those who serve our nation in uniform and the families who stand beside them.

From the first ANZACs, generations of Australians have answered the call to serve with courage, commitment and a deep sense of duty.

I am honoured to join South Australians in recognising the enduring legacy of this service, and the profound impact that those who serve today continue to have on who we are as a nation.

Lest we forget.
