Total demand for credit was $142.4 billion this quarter.
This was driven by households ($63.3 billion), private non-financial businesses ($48.3 billion) and general government ($24.3 billion).
Household demand for credit was higher than September 2025 ($31.4 billion), driven by growth in housing loan balances.
'The December quarter had the strongest growth in housing loan balances since December 2021, with strength across all borrower types. Recent policy changes for first home buyers were reflected in the strength of new loan commitments which are flowing through to the increase in housing loan balances,' Dr Tan said.
In the December quarter, an expansion of the Australian Government 5% Deposit Scheme was introduced as well as the Australian Government Help to Buy Scheme.
