Hume's newest schools welcome first students

Hume City's newest schools Mickleham Secondary College and Wayi School opened their doors to students this week.

The secondary college will give Mickleham's emerging young leaders the opportunity to study close to home.

The school's first stage has space for up to 800 students, science and technology buildings, a community hub and a competition grade basketball and netball court. Once all stages are complete, the school will have capacity for 1200 students.

Wayi School in Craigieburn, a prep-12 school for children living with disability in Hume also opened this week. The school includes junior and senior learning neighborhoods, a community hub with a competition-grade gym, canteen and performing arts space and will have space for up to 144 students.

Our growing population will see the number of primary and secondary school students increase to over 32,000 and almost 25,000 respectively by 2035.

Improvements to schools in Hume continue to be a key priority of Council. It is expected that over the next 20 years, an additional 21 state primary and secondary schools will have to be delivered by the Victorian Government to meet the needs of our rapidly growing community.

We thank the Victorian Government for their support of the Hume community and call on the Federal and State Governments to fund improvements to Hume's roads, public transport, health care and social housing.
