Husband and wife duo fight for prostate cancer awareness

PCFA

Prostate cancer is a cause close to the hearts of Scarborough-based couple, Tony and Natalie Turnbull, after the loss of Natalie's father from the disease 19 years ago and Tony's own diagnosis in late 2022.

The pair have set their sights on a rather unique challenge - getting 22 people in their area to ask men in their lives if they have been tested.

Their bid coincides with Men's Health Week and is part of a campaign by Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia to double funding for prostate cancer research in Australia.

"Our motivation was to get more men talking about prostate cancer and to make it part of everyday conversations, especially about asking the question of the men in our lives - have you had a recent PSA test?" shared Mrs Turnbull.

"Tony was diagnosed with prostate cancer late last year just from a regular PSA test - no symptoms, just a rise in his PSA level.

"My father passed away from prostate cancer 19 years ago but back then there was not the information or the talk about it that there is now. By the time he went and did anything about it, it was too late."

Mr and Mrs Turnbull are taking part in PCFA's Perfect Match campaign to raise funds for research to beat prostate cancer.

As a bonus, all donations to the campaign are being doubled by iconic Australian brands Tyrepower and Hire A Hubby.

Around 220 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year in the Redcliffe region.

Mr and Mrs Turnbull have already beaten their fundraising goal and hope to raise even more.

"I lost a great mate late last year to prostate cancer. He put up a mammoth fight but unfortunately was not able to beat it in the end. He was an inspiration to us all," Mr Turnbull said.
