Campaspe Shire Council will mark the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on Friday 15 May, with a series of community events in Echuca celebrating inclusion, visibility and the fundamental role of equality in a healthy democracy.

IDAHOBIT is observed internationally on 17 May and commemorates the World Health Organization's decision to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1990. The 2026 theme, At the heart of democracy, highlights that true democratic societies must be grounded in justice, dignity and freedom for all, particularly at a time when LGBTIQA+ rights are under increasing pressure globally.

Local celebrations will begin with a flag raising and speeches at Hopwood Gardens, before continuing with a full day of free activities at the Echuca Library, delivered in partnership with Thorne Harbour Country, headspace Echuca, Njernda Aboriginal Corporation and Echuca Moama Pride Incorporated.

Campaspe Shire Deputy Mayor Cr Tony Marwood said IDAHOBIT was an important opportunity for the community to stand together against discrimination and affirm Council's commitment to inclusion.

"IDAHOBIT is about visibility, respect and ensuring everyone in our community feels safe to be who they are," Cr Marwood said.

"This year's theme reminds us that equality and human rights aren't optional extras. They're central to a functioning democracy. When any group is excluded or targeted, our whole community is weaker."

Following the flag raising at Hopwood Gardens, community members are invited to attend a range of activities at Echuca Library, all free and open to the public:

  • All day Pride-themed arts and crafts
  • 11.30am-1.45pm: Story Sharing in the 'Human Library', facilitated by Thorne Harbour Country, featuring powerful local stories of resilience, identity and community. Light refreshments, tea and coffee provided.
  • 2.00pm-4.00pm: IDAHOBIT movie matinee screening of the modern queer classic PRIDE (M, 2014), with snacks and afternoon tea.
  • 4.00pm-5.00pm: Pride and Pizza with headspace for young people aged 14-17, featuring free pizza, rainbow crafts and a welcoming space to connect.

Council thanked its community partners for their leadership and collaboration in delivering the 2026 program.

"We're proud to work alongside Thorne Harbour Country, headspace, Njernda and Echuca Moama Pride Incorporated," Cr Marwood said.

"Their work strengthens our community and ensures these events are authentic, welcoming and meaningful."
