More TransBroome bus services will roll out from Sunday, 5 July with new payment options to make it easier for residents and visitors to jump on public transport.
Four additional buses, new bus stops, and SmartRider and contactless payment options will make catching public transport to key destinations across Broome easier.
The Cook Labor Government committed $14.2 million at the 2026/27 State Budget to continue and expand the Broome bus service.
The enhanced Route 890 will commence on 5 July, operating every 30 minutes from 7.30 am to 7pm seven days a week during the peak tourist season (until 17 October 2026).
Special event services will also operate for key local events, including Staircase to the Moon and during cruise ship arrivals.
Passengers will be able to pay with their SmartRider from 5 July, meaning they can access the $2.80 Go Anywhere Fare and free travel on Sundays.
From October, TransBroome services will expand to Broome North, Roebuck Estate, Old Broome and Cable Beach, and the airport.
Community engagement will take place from 13 June to 17 June, giving people the opportunity to learn about the changes and provide feedback on the proposed route.
Community sessions will be held:
- Saturday, 13 June: Boulevard Shopping Centre, Broome from 10am-4pm;
- Sunday, 14 June: Boulevard Shopping Centre, Broome from 10am-4pm; and
- Monday, 15 June: Broome Visitor Centre from 10am-2pm.
A comprehensive passenger communications campaign will also help keep the Broome community informed about the new and expanded services.
The Transregional team will also meet with local schools to educate students about the improved bus services, including the SmartRider Ride to School Free Program.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"We're proud to have locked in Broome bus services for the long haul in our recent State Budget, so the community can continue to access reliable and affordable public transport.
"The TransBroome bus service is crucial to keeping locals connected to essential services and job opportunities, as well as helping tourists get around the region and support the local economy.
"We're not only running more services and making it easier to pay with a SmartRider, debit, or credit card, but we'll also service even more of Broome from October."
As stated by Regional Development and Kimberley Minister Stephen Dawson:
"This $14.2 million investment in the 2026-27 State Budget shows the Cook Labor Government's commitment to improving transport services in Broome and supporting a growing community.
"We're continuing to listen to the community, with engagement sessions in June and further service expansion planned later this year to Broome North, Cable Beach, and the airport."
As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:
"We want to make sure the expanded TransBroome bus service meets the needs of our community now and into the future.
"That's why we're calling on Broome residents to have their say on the proposed new route to help shape this important public transport service for our region.
"This is all part of the Cook Labor Government's commitment to delivering affordable and accessible public transport for Western Australians."
