RSPCA WA has welcomed an industry-leading initiative to provide all feedlot cattle with access to shade.
The Australian Lot Feeders Association (ALFA) has launched an initiative encouraging all Australian feedlots to provide cattle with access to shade by 2026.
Research undertaken by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) shows access to shade improves welfare, making cattle more comfortable, and leads to a higher weight at slaughter.
An estimated 60 per cent of Australia's feedlot capacity already has shade available for stock.
The 2026 deadline is designed to enable enough planning and installation time in which individual businesses can overcome installation challenges.
