The $4.7 million redevelopment of J L Murphy Reserve, Port Melbourne was celebrated virtually today, after the official opening in March was delayed by COVID-19.
The extensive upgrades were driven by the increased participation of women in sport, with four additional unisex accessible change rooms and redevelopment of existing change rooms being delivered, allowing increased access and participation for people of all genders and abilities.
Council invested $3.2 million, in partnership with Victorian Government, which contributed $1.24 million. Tenant clubs and AFL Victoria also made financial contributions of $200,000.
Mayor Bernadene Voss said the extra facilities would greatly benefit sportswomen using the reserve.
"While clubs have been unable to enjoy the upgrades due to the disruption of COVID-19, when community sport resumes, we look forward to cheering on teams at J L Murphy Reserve. Over the past few years, we have seen significant growth in women's participation in sport and to support this growth, we need to cater to their needs. The upgrades mean sportswomen will have access to the same quality facilities as the male players," Cr Voss said. "Council is proud of its significant investment in local sport and we hope the improved facilities will encourage residents of all ages and abilities to stay active."
J L Murphy Reserve is a popular sportsground used by multiple football, soccer, cricket and baseball clubs, as well as schools and local community programs and the upgrades reflect the need to cater to a wide range of users.
New features include a larger multipurpose room with improved functionality for clubs and community groups, improved kitchen facilities and upgraded public bathrooms.
"The improvements create a safe and vibrant park for everyone in the community to play sport, build their fitness or relax with friends and family," Cr Voss said.
J L Murphy Reserve is used by Port Colts Football Club, Port Colts Junior Football Club, Middle Park Football Club, Port Melbourne Cricket Club and Port Melbourne Baseball Club.
When not in use by tenant clubs, the oval and pavilion at J L Murphy are available for community use. Images: J L Murphy Pavilion Plaque and completed pavilion.
