The Government of Japan has allocated USD 39 million to support a wide range of operations implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in 2026, in line with IOM's Global Appeal. This contribution will enable IOM to assist vulnerable populations and strengthen border management in multiple countries across the globe facing conflict, disaster, and complex humanitarian crises.
"At a time when so many people are facing crisis and uncertainty, the Government and people of Japan continue to show a deep sense of solidarity," said IOM Director General Amy Pope. "Their support helps us reach families and communities who need it most - quickly, and with care - while also working alongside them to find lasting ways forward. We are truly grateful for this partnership."
Up to 40 per cent of the contribution will advance IOM's work across Sub‑Saharan Africa, including assistance for displaced populations, strengthening early warning systems, expanding access to essential services and energy solutions, and improved border governance. Countries benefiting from this support include Côte d'Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mozambique, Somalia, Rwanda, and Uganda.
In Asia and the Pacific, where approximately 30 per cent of the funding is allocated, the contribution will strengthen local disaster risk reduction measures and provide durable shelter solutions in countries such as Cambodia, Fiji, the Marshall Islands, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Thailand. It will also support urgent humanitarian needs in Bangladesh and Myanmar, as well as efforts to address trafficking in persons in Southeast Asia.
Beyond these regions, Japan's funding will be instrumental in the delivery of humanitarian relief and recovery assistance in Ukraine, strengthening border management in Türkiye, facilitating the reintegration of internally displaced persons in Iraq, El Salvador and Yemen, and assisting vulnerable migrants and returnees in Haiti and Venezuela.
For decades, the Government of Japan has been a consistent and valued partner of IOM, helping ensure that vulnerable populations worldwide receive timely and life‑saving assistance. Activities will be implemented in close with coordination with recipient countries and partners, in line with Japan's long‑standing leadership on humanitarian issues and security, with robust monitoring to ensure transparency and results.
