JCU Launches AI Centre To Tackle Tropical Challenges

James Cook University has launched its new Centre for AI and Data Science Innovation (CADSI), a cross-disciplinary hub designed to harness artificial intelligence for real-world impact across the Tropics.

The Centre will focus on applying AI and data science to address the region's most pressing challenges and emerging opportunities in an increasingly AI-driven world.

JCU Professor Mostafa Rahimi Azghadi, Head of CADSI, said the Centre would give researchers the capability to tackle complex challenges and deliver practical solutions.

"CADSI will connect researchers across JCU and beyond, bringing together cross-college teams and external partners to deliver high-impact AI and data science projects," he said.

"By bringing experts together, we can use AI to amplify our research impact and strengthen partnerships nationally and globally.

"We will provide seed support to help teams get started and position themselves for major external grants and AI research translation.

"Without a coordinated centre like this, we risk falling behind in AI, missing major opportunities and leaving our expertise fragmented."

Proposed internally and approved in mid-2025, the Centre was refined through extensive consultation across multiple colleges, with oversight from a formal Centre Management Committee of senior academics.

"Through that process, we identified four key impact domains: nature, health, economies and communities," Prof Azghadi said.

"To deliver impact in these areas, the Centre will build strength in core capability domains including AI and machine learning, advanced data science and analytics, and remote sensing and spatial intelligence.

"It will also focus on connected and autonomous systems, organisational and institutional innovation, and education and training."

JCU Vice Chancellor Professor Simon Biggs said CADSI brings together researchers from multiple colleges, campuses and disciplines, from senior professors to early career researchers.

"CADSI's mission is to empower people, communities and industry across the Tropics by applying ethical and responsible AI and data science to generate new knowledge and deliver transformative innovation," Professor Biggs said.

"The Centre will be recognised as the leading AI and data science hub in the Tropics, fusing technical expertise with deep contextual knowledge and connecting research, industry, government and communities to co-create transformative solutions."

As part of the launch, CADSI has announced seed funding to facilitate cross-disciplinary projects, helping JCU researchers and partners respond to emerging challenges in an AI-shaped world.
