Jenny's Enduring Legacy With Cancer Council NSW

Cancer Council NSW

Former Mayor of Lismore, long‑time community advocate, and dedicated Cancer Council volunteer Jenny Dowell died on March 24, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, including her husband of 46 years Ron, children Georgina and Tim, and her sister Robyn

In the final week of her life, Jenny sat down with Cancer Council to reflect on her cancer experience and the cause that became central to her life.

Jenny was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, days after she was elected as mayor. The diagnosis was especially confronting, having already lost both of her parents to cancer, and the experience felt "deeply personal".

After undergoing treatment, which included chemotherapy and a mastectomy, she was eventually given the welcome news that she was cancer free. Jenny then devoted years to giving back to her community. Not only did she participate in and volunteer in the Relay for Life committee, but she also offered support as an empathetic listener to others who reached out who were personally impacted by cancer.

After 17 "wonderful years" living cancer free, Jenny received another diagnosis in May 2025 - this time, it was metastatic cancer.

Despite her declining health, Jenny remained determined to keep supporting others affected by cancer, just as she had done for so many years.

"For me, it's about two things," said Jenny. "It's about supporting people with cancer, but it's also about having that railing at the top of the place rather than just the ambulance at the bottom. We need research to ensure we have a few wins along the way to finding prevention and treatments for cancer. And money going into research is what's required for that."

Relay for Life: a community close to her heart

Jenny and her husband, Ron, both served on the Relay for Life committee, helping guide and grow the event in their local community. It was fitting that Jenny's final public appearance was at the event she was so passionate about, surrounded by family, friends, and the wider community who supported team Dowell Red Hearts in Lismore. Her final Relay For Life event raised more than $85,000.

"I recommend people join Relay for Life and participate because it's truly community building. It's heartwarming. Sad. Joyous. It's everything. I'd encourage everyone to pop along."

Beyond fundraising and community connection, Jenny was also a strong advocate for cancer prevention and early detection. Drawing on both her personal experience and her public profile, she encouraged people to take part in regular screening programs.

"We are a family with a high awareness of cancer and commitment to the cancer cause. My high profile as mayor has left me with a role of educating and encouraging people not to avoid the signs [of cancer]. Do your regular mammograms and pap smears and bowel tests and all those things that help with an early diagnosis," she said.

A legacy recognised nationally

Jenny's work had an impact beyond her local community. In recognition of her service and leadership, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recorded a personal video message in her honour.

"You've served the proud community of Lismore with bravery and boldness, most importantly, always in the service of others," he said.

Jenny's parting words to those living with cancer

Jenny deeply believed in the power of connection and support, and she spoke of the honour of being able to accompany others through their cancer experience.

"It's a huge privilege to be let into someone's world," Jenny said.

"And to be able to share their fears and help them along the way. I encourage them to use the Cancer Council website and phone number (13 11 20) and to connect with all the services that Cancer Council can offer as far as support is concerned," she said.

"I feel honoured to be in a position where I've had the power of my voice and promote the work that Cancer Council does. This time I will rest in peace."

Selfless to the very end, Jenny requested that, in lieu of flowers, funeral attendees donate to Cancer Council.

In memory of Jenny Dowell, whose compassion and generosity continues to leave a lasting legacy with Cancer Council and the community she served so proudly.
