JMU Shines in 2025 Shanghai Ranking

The University of Würzburg performs very well in the 'Global Ranking of Academic Subjects'. Pharmaceutical sciences, life sciences, medical technology, and physics are particularly noteworthy.

The Shanghai Ranking evaluates more than 2,000 universities in over 100 countries each year across 57 research fields. Universities are evaluated on the number and citation impact of scientific publications, international collaborations, and recognition through awards for excellent research.

The Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (JMU) continues its success story: In the current 2025 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) by the renowned Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, the university achieves outstanding results across several fields.

Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medical Technology, Biological Sciences, and Physics are particularly strong. In addition, JMU ranks among the top ten percent worldwide in other disciplines such as Clinical Medicine, Ecology, and Communication.

"The Shanghai Subject Rankings once again confirm the excellent work of our researchers," emphasizes JMU President Paul Pauli. "It clearly shows that our research is visible and successful not only nationally but also internationally - a strong signal for the future course of the Excellence Competition."

Global Comparison - Local Top Positions

In Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, which includes disciplines of Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Medicinal Chemistry, and Toxicology, JMU stands out: ranked 42nd globally and 2nd in Germany, and it holds the top position in Bavaria. Especially notable is the HighQuality Research indicator, which measures the number of highly influential articles published in top journals. Here, JMU leads in Germany with a score of 67.3.

Medical Technology, covering areas from laboratory technologies to neuroimaging and nuclear medicine, also shows strong performance. JMU ranks 55th worldwide and among the top 10 in Germany (3rd in Bavaria). In Biological Sciences, it is ranked 95th globally, placing it among the five best universities in Germany (3rd in Bavaria).

With these results, JMU underlines its position as an internationally recognized research institution also across numerous other disciplines with above-average performance, including Physics, Clinical Medicine, Ecology, and Communication, which are among the top ten percent worldwide.
