Progress on the Joondalup Health Campus Development Stage 2 Project is advancing, with new artist impressions released today.
Early works have finished to relocate the emergency department administration unit to make room for the major expansion within the hospital.
Having progressed the concept design, the project now moves into the detailed design phase.
The designs have been informed using feedback from various areas within the hospital, as well as consumers.
Consumers have been consulted throughout the work to date, and this will continue during the project.
The next priority is the appointment of the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) builder.
Ramsay Health Care and the ECI contractor will work together to further develop the design of the works which includes documenting the timing and sequencing, construction methodology, staging and agreed costing.
The phase will culminate with the contractor presenting an ECI proposal that, if accepted, will move the project into the construction phase.
The entire build is expected to be completed by late 2025.
The expansion of the Joondalup Health Campus was a major 2017 election commitment by the McGowan Government.
The total cost of the expansion project is estimated at $256.7 million, of which the Commonwealth has committed $158 million.
The expansion will include:
- a new mental health building, with 30 new acute mental health inpatient beds;
- 12 new ED beds to be configured as a negative air-flow infectious diseases unit, with two dedicated negatively pressured isolation rooms designed with future COVID-19 outbreaks or infectious disease presentations in mind;
- a Behaviour Assessment Urgent Care Clinic to treat drug and alcohol-affected ED patients;
- 90 inpatient beds in a design to meet future demand;
- six new Critical Care beds;
- increased parking bays for members of the public and staff; and
- a new operating theatre and cardiac catheter laboratory.
As stated by Health Minister Roger Cook:
"The development of the design has included getting feedback from various areas within the hospital and, importantly, was informed by the hospital's experience earlier this year in caring for 42 COVID positive patients.
"Having a new unit in the ED which has negative air flow will enhance safety of both staff and other patients by allowing near-immediate quarantining of a patient with any infectious disease or influenza-like illness, including COVID-19.
"Expanding the Joondalup Health Campus to meet the growing demand in our northern suburbs is a priority for the McGowan Government.
"It is something we promised coming into government and something we are proud to be delivering.
"The McGowan Government is putting patients first and delivering on its election commitment to the residents of Perth's northern suburbs.
"This expansion will create hundreds of local jobs - both during the construction phase and when the expanded facility opens."
