City of Darwin is encouraging local families to leave the car at home and take part in National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 22 May 2026.
Held annually across Australia, the initiative promotes the benefits of walking to school and encourages children to build healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
City of Darwin Lord Mayor, Peter Styles, said National Walk Safely to School Day was a great opportunity for families to make the most of Darwin's beautiful dry season weather while prioritising children's health and wellbeing.
"With the cooler mornings and comfortable temperatures of the dry season now here, it's the perfect time for families to walk to school together," Mr Styles said.
"By choosing to walk where possible, families can help ease traffic around schools while teaching children important road safety skills and encouraging independence.
"Encouraging more people to walk is a key priority under City of Darwin's Movement Strategy, which aims to make it easier for people to move around the municipality through improved connectivity, streetscapes and active transport options.
"National Walk Safely to School Day also aligns with City of Darwin's Place and Liveability Plan 2050, which focuses on creating safer streets, greener and cooler public spaces, vibrant neighbourhoods and stronger community connections.
"Walking to school helps create the kind of connected, healthy and liveable neighbourhoods envisioned in our Place and Liveability Plan," he said.
National Walk Safely to School Day highlights the importance of establishing healthy habits early, with many Australian children not getting enough daily physical activity.
Parents and carers are reminded that children under the age of 10 should be with an adult when crossing the road.
