Just like Blinky Bill, many koalas have had their homes destroyed in the Hastings-Macleay region and a committed partnership is helping increase the habitat available to these koalas.

Habitat loss can occur from bushfires and clearing of land and Kempsey Shire Council has partnered with organisations to help boost koala numbers, rebuild their homes and guarantee the longevity of this iconic species.

Through the Koala Recovery Partnership, Council along with its partners are on a mission to improve koala conservation across the Hastings-Macleay region. Representatives engage with local landholders, the community, research groups and government agencies to deliver key projects aiding local koala recovery including long-term monitoring programs and the Koala Smart school program.

The Koala Recovery Partnership is a joint venture between the NSW Government, Department of Planning Industry and Environment, the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, Kempsey Shire Council and the Mid North Coast Joint Organisation's Executive Officer.
