The Cook Labor Government will sell 8.8 hectares of Crown land to the City of Greater Geraldton for $1, supporting the development of a new 140-dwelling key worker village.
The sale, at a nominal consideration, follows the City being allocated $8.7 million earlier this year through the State Government's $120 million Infrastructure Development Fund (IDF).
The IDF assists with the costs of supplying essential utilities to enable developments, including water and power connections.
Located just south of the Geraldton CBD, the City's proposed village is set to be constructed over several stages and will help to ease pressure on the local rental market by providing dedicated housing for key workers and their families.
Geraldton has experienced an increased demand for worker accommodation due to its proximity to major projects, including the Geraldton Health Campus redevelopment.
The State Labor Government is investing a record $10.8 billion in housing since 2021, with a strong focus on unlocking land for new housing.
As stated by Planning and Lands Minister John Carey:
"The sale of this land for $1 is a recognition of the significant benefit this project will have for the Geraldton community and for the region's growing economy.
"We are unlocking 8.8 hectares of underutilised Crown land in Geraldton to help the City support the delivery of key worker accommodation.
"Through our Infrastructure Development Fund, we have also allocated up to $8.7 million to help cover the upfront costs of infrastructure required to connect the site to essential utilities, such as power and water supply."
