Lawyers Alliance welcomes new Federal Ministry

ALA

The new Federal Government Ministry has the opportunity to make positive reform and work to deliver justice to all Australians, said the Australian Lawyers Alliance (ALA) welcoming the country's new leaders to their roles.

"We congratulate Mr Dreyfus QC on his appointment to the role of Attorney-General and look forward to working with him," said ALA National President, Mr Graham Droppert SC.

"The ALA agrees with the Law Council of Australia that there is a need for a strong Commonwealth Integrity Commission or Independent Corruption Commission. Corruption has many corrosive effects on society and serves to undermine democracy and the rule of law.

"We look forward to the opportunity to work with Mr Dreyfus to ensure the Commission is effective and can achieve its intent.

"There is also an important opportunity for the new Government to make reform to enable the Commonwealth to better assist in resolving claims made against it."

The ALA's members work frequently with individuals needing support from the NDIS or Centrelink.

"We welcome Mr Shorten in his role as the Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme as well as the Minister for Government Services," said Mr Droppert SC. "We look forward to a productive relationship as we work to make sure the NDIS is efficient and works effectively for the people who need it.

"We are also very encouraged by the new Labor Government's commitment to the Uluru Statement. Australians are ready for a referendum on this issue."
