Learner driver breaks all rules - Gillman

A learner driver will face court after he was detected travelling at 130km/h in a 60km/h zone at Gillman last night and also tested positive to drugs.

Just after 10pm on Saturday 16 January, police were monitoring traffic on the Grand Trunkway, when they timed a blue Commodore sedan travelling at 130km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Police activated their emergency flashing lights and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver allegedly refused and it continued north onto Garden Island. Police pursued the Commodore for a short moment then terminated the pursuit for safety reasons.

A few minutes later, a patrol located the wanted vehicle abandoned on the island, then finding the driver and two passengers about 70 metres away hiding in bushes.

The driver, a 25-year-old man from Ingle Farm was drug tested allegedly returning a positive sample to cannabis.

Police enquiries also revealed he was only the holder of a learners permit, wasn't displaying L plates and didn't have a qualified supervising driver present.

The Ingle Farm was reported for driving at a speed dangerous to the public, engaging in a police pursuit, breaching his learners permit conditions and drug driving. The blue Commodore sedan was also impounded for 28 days and defected for mechanical faults.
