Council has supported the budget bid by the advocacy campaign Libraries Change Lives led by Public Libraries Victoria and the State Library of Victoria to boost operational funding.
At the 30 April 2019 meeting Council resolved to write a letter of support to join the Libraries Change Lives Budget Bid 2019-20 calling for the State Government to provide additional funding in three priority areas:
- Boost operational funding for public libraries through a $15 million investment increase over four years;
- Invest in library infrastructure through a $20 million increase in the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program; and
- Deliver early years education to create literate and educated communities through a $10 million investment.
The Libraries Change Lives campaign seeks to highlight the role of public libraries in building literate, productive and engaged communities with the goal of ensuring libraries get the support they need to grow, and provide vital services to growing communities.
