Love is in the air at City of Adelaide libraries today.
But instead of scattered petals, a dozen roses or a box of chocolates, the City of Adelaide is celebrating International Library Lovers' Day - which coincides with Valentine's Day - with storytelling, craft workshops and technology demonstrations at its Rundle Mall, Hutt Street and North Adelaide libraries.
International Library Lovers' Day encourages people to reconnect with their local libraries, borrow a book and give thanks to the tireless work of librarians, staff, and volunteers.
The City of Adelaide's libraries have roughly 21,000 members and staff and volunteers help run 2500 community programs, including science and Lego clubs, wellness groups and 3D printing demonstrations.
Lord Mayor Jane Lomax Smith said the City of Adelaide's libraries are incredibly popular, averaging about 25,000 visitors every month.
"A library is one of those pivotal pillars of society, much like a museum or a university," said the Lord Mayor.
"They not only give children the chance to discover the escapism of reading but offer a wide range of other services to city users such as computer access or free help sessions.
"My idea of a perfect day is an early morning coffee and a walk to my local City Library on Hutt Street to find a new title I can curl up with at the weekend.
"Days like International Library Lover's Day give people the perfect excuse to fall in love all over again with their local library, pay it a visit and pick up a book."
Stories for children about love, libraries and books will be read at the three libraries between 10:30 am and 11:15 am.
Library Lover's Day started in Australia in 2006 and has grown to be celebrated across the world.
