Liverpool's free Chemical CleanOut is back this July

Liverpool City Council's Chemical CleanOut is back for residents on Sunday 24 July from 9am – 3.30pm at 99 Rose Street, Liverpool. This free service provides a good opportunity for residents to make the home safer by clearing out unused chemicals, fuels and potential hazardous products.

Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun encourages residents to take part in the Chemical CleanOut as it provides a responsible way to dispose of potentially hazardous household chemicals and help to protect our environment and waterways.

"Some common household items that cannot be disposed in general waste includes household cleaners, fluorescent globes, smoke detectors and household batteries – this is your opportunity to collect all these items and clear them out of your home," Mayor Mannoun said.

Residents can dispose of the following household chemicals and items, up to a maximum of 20 litres or 20 kilograms of a single item, except paint, where up to 100 litres in 20 litres containers is accepted:

  • Paint and paint related products (thinners, strippers, varnish);
  • Pesticides/herbicides;
  • Solvents and household cleaners;
  • Motor oils, fuels and fluids;
  • Batteries;
  • Gas bottles;
  • Fire extinguishers;
  • Pool chemicals;
  • Acids and alkalis;
  • Hobby chemicals such as photography chemicals; and
  • Fluorescent tubes.

Residents are advised to transport materials in original containers if possible, without mixing, and ensure containers are well-sealed.

Containers holding liquids should be wrapped in newspaper and secured in plastic bags, then packed into buckets or trays.

It is advisable to transport the materials in a space away from passengers, such as in the boot.

Please ensure containers are clearly labelled and sealed. If the contents is unknown please label the container with 'unknown chemical.'

Please call the Environment Line on 131 555 to find out correct disposal for businesses as business-related and commercial quantities will not be accepted.
