Local Government Reforms Clear Assembly

The Local Government Amendment (Targeted Reform) Bill 2026 has passed the House of Assembly.
The Bill modernises the Local Government Act 1993 to improve local representation, elevate standards of conduct and enhance the strategic capability of the sector.
Minister for Local Government, Kerry Vincent, said he was pleased to see the Bill pass.
"I have a long history with the local government sector and as Minister I take a great deal of interest in it," Minister Vincent said.
"These legislative changes have been developed with the sector every step of the way, and I would like to particularly thank the Local Government Association of Tasmania for their input.
"Local government, when performing well, delivers a better quality of life for Tasmanians across the board.
"I look forward to the Bill continuing to progress through the Parliament."
