Local Heroes Celebrated on Disability Awareness Day

Residents living with disability have been recognised for their achievements and contributions to the Greater Geelong community at a special International Day of People with Disability event.

One hundred and forty-nine community members came together for a celebration at the Geelong Library and Heritage Centre last night, joined by Deputy Mayor Ron Nelson, Councillor Anthony Aitken, Councillor Elise Wilkinson and Councillor Rowan Story AM, RFD.

Selected from 19 nominations, the winners of the Geelong Awards for People with Disability were announced and presented with trophies by Councillor Aitken, who is chair of the Disability Access and Inclusion portfolio:

Achievement Award: Scott Price

Scott's creativity extends into projects like The Democratic Set and RADIAL, which give communities a chance to tell their stories in fresh and inclusive ways. Scott, who was 'stoked' to receive his trophy, openly speaks about the importance of celebrating disability and making sure everyone is treated equally. Scott's mix of artistry, advocacy and leadership makes him a talented actor and role model.

Leadership and Advocacy Award: Clare Reilly

Clare's podcast, MS Understood, shares conversations about Multiple Sclerosis with thousands of listeners and offers practical strategies. Her speaking engagements, advocacy and fundraising highlight the importance of accessibility and inclusive spaces. She is studying to become a counsellor for people newly diagnosed with chronic illness or disability. Clare's work shows that people with disability can lead full and influential lives.

Volunteering Award: Chris Henderson

'Hendo' embodies the spirit of this award through his unwavering commitment to advocacy, leadership and support for individuals with disabilities. His work through the Freedom Sports Foundation and its partnership with Kids+ has given young people the chance to experience the camaraderie that sports bring through the Wheelchair Sport Program. Hendo strives for an inclusive, diverse and socially connected community.

Inclusive Business Award: Heather Thompson

As founder of Life Is Worth Living, Heather creates opportunities for people with disability to live fulfilling lives, participate in their communities and achieve goals. She invests in the next generation of inclusive practitioners through her mentoring of staff and students. Heather's vision demonstrates how small businesses can drive meaningful, lasting social change.

The Geelong Awards for People with Disability were proudly hosted by the City, with supporting partners Rights Information and Advocacy Centre (RIAC) and VALiD . This year's event was co-designed with six community members with lived experience of disability.

Deputy Mayor Nelson

The four winners should be incredibly proud of their efforts.

Having worked with people with disability and their families in the disability sector for many years, I deeply appreciate how important these awards are.

Our Geelong Awards for People with Disability are an opportunity to recognise those who champion the rights of people with disability, lead with example and improve accessibility and inclusion.

Congratulations to Clare, Hendo, Heather and Scott for helping to make Greater Geelong a better place to live and work in.

Cr Aitken

Difficult decisions were made by the panel of three judges.

The calibre of this year's nominations was very high and we thank everyone for putting these talented and determined people forward.

The atmosphere at last night's ceremony was one of positivity and warmth as we recognised and celebrated so many local achievements.
